How to install a new harddrive in your PS3
"The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try to restart the system.
If the system cannot be restarted, the system partition of the hard disk must be reformated and you must install the system software. Insert storage media that contains update data of version 3.30 or later, and then press the START and SELECT buttons at the same time.
For information on how to obtain update data, refer to the SCE web site for your region".
Of course your data version my vary depending on when your read these instructions!
So what to do? Well after you swap out the harddrive thats the error you will be getting, what you need to do is use some form of media storage device to install the correct firmware update To do this, here is what you need:Required items:
PLAYSTATION®3 system
A wireless controller with the usb cable
A PC with Internet access
A Storage media device such as a usb thumb drive, external harddrive, you may also use CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and BD-RE are supported
Update data download procedure:
1. Create a new folder name this folder PS3 *this must be in all caps*
2. Withing that folder create another folder name this UPDATE *again all caps*
3. then go to http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/index.htm to download the the latest update for your system make sure this file gets put into the UPDATE folder, the file will look something like this "PS3UPDAT.PUP"
4. Once you have completed the download move the PS3 folder containg your update to your media storage device or burn to a disk of your choice.
*note to maximise your chances of completing this without problems it's probably best to use Sony products they will have the best compatibility with your system. Such as a Sony brand usb drive, or Sony brand CD-R. But this still can be completed using other brand names. When I completed this task I used a Western Digital Passport 320GB, I was also successful using a Lacie brand external hdd. Also it's probably a good idea to backup your PS3 with the backup utility, and back up your game saves as well, although some that I have spoken to never needed their backup.
Installation Procedure:
*Now that your storage device has the data in place insert the thumb drive into one of the respective usb ports, or if using the disk method insert the disk into the disk drive
*At this point follow the on screen instructions to press the PS button, then it will tell you to press the start and select buttons together to have the system search for the update. Once you have done that the system will start checking this will probably take about 30sec.
*Then is will talk about formating your hard drive and ask you to again press the select & start buttons together but this time you will need to hold them for appox 5sec, at which point the system will start a checking sequence again wich takes appox 40sec then the formatting process will begin.
It will take appox 2min for the format process to reach 99%
It may take a few min for the progress to finally reach 100% so don't freak out, I however am very impatient when it comes to this especally when it was almost finished aaahhhh. Anyway back on track, if your newly installed harddrive has never been formated to any other format, basicaly you bought it brand new and stuck it in the PS3 it probably will only take a few min to reach 100% mine however had been formated to an exFAT and the format once it hit 99% took a long time to finally reach 100%.
After the formatting finishes it will restart the system and begin installing the update so make sure that you keep your media storage device pluged into the system untill everything finishes.
If your previous system settings, wallpaper, themes, ect... don't get restored then you can use your handy dandy back up you made to restore it back the way it was like it was never even gone. Congradulations you have just completed your PS3 hard drive swap, happy gaming to all and always.
